The Only Strategy That Works
Baccarat strategy is simpler than any other casino game: bet Banker, skip Tie and side bets, flat-bet within bankroll. Here's the six-step breakdown.
- 1
Bet the Banker, always
The Banker bet has a 1.06% house edge — the second-lowest of any major casino bet. The commission (usually 5% on winning Banker bets) is already priced into the probabilities. Every other baccarat bet is worse.
- 2
Never bet the Tie
The Tie bet pays 8:1 but true odds are closer to 9.5:1. House edge: 14.36%. This single bet accounts for most baccarat bankroll losses among UK players. Skip it every hand, permanently.
- 3
Skip pair side bets
Player Pair and Banker Pair both have ~10.36% house edges. They feel fun, they cost a lot. Stick to the main Banker/Player decisions.
- 4
Understand pattern-tracking is an illusion
The scorecards showing “big road,” “bead road,” “derived roads” have no predictive power whatsoever. Each shoe is independent. Each coup is nearly independent. Tracking streaks is entertainment, not strategy.
- 5
Manage your bankroll strictly
Flat-bet 1–2% of bankroll per coup. Set a stop-loss of ~20% of bankroll. Baccarat plays fast — 70+ coups per hour at live tables — and the 1% edge compounds quickly.
- 6
Choose live tables with lower commissions
Some UK live tables offer 4% Banker commission instead of 5%, cutting the Banker edge to roughly 0.6%. Evolution's No Commission baccarat pays 0.95:1 on any Banker 6 win and avoids the 5% cut elsewhere — research the RTP before sitting.
The Myth of “Hot Shoes” and Pattern Tracking
Walk into any live baccarat table and you'll see players obsessively tracking scorecards — “big road,” “bead plate,” “small road,” “cockroach road.” These are visualisations of past results. They have zero predictive power.
Why Pattern-Tracking Fails
- • Each coup (hand) has its own independent probability: Banker ~45.86%, Player ~44.62%, Tie ~9.52%.
- • The outcome of coup N has no mechanical effect on coup N+1 — just as spinning a roulette wheel doesn't “remember” previous spins.
- • The “shoe bias” concept relies on the idea that shuffled 8-deck shoes carry predictable imbalances. They don't — shuffles are rigorously tested by UKGC-approved labs and random to the limits of simulation.
- • The derived roads (“big eye boy,” etc.) are mathematical transformations of the big road — they don't add new information, they repackage the same meaningless pattern.
The casinos offer scorecards because they keep players at the table longer. That's it.
